Evidence Post #2 2025/26 School Year

Evidence Post June 2026

What targeted actions did we take to address our school’s learning focus?

The specific actions that we have taken is providing teachers collaboration time along with district consultants to plan for instruction with a focus on early literacy skills, as well as making personal connections to a variety of texts.

District consultants modelled the literacy centre format and then teachers developed, prepared and implemented literacy centres in their own classrooms according to the needs of the students.

What gap or problem were these actions intended to address? Why was this particular strategy/action chosen? The gap we were trying to address was how can students make connections to literature in a way that feels safe and authentic. Our intention was to move our emerging and developing students towards proficiency in making connections to themselves, texts, and the world around them.
What does the evidence tell us so far?

When we compare our fall to spring district reading assessment data on making connections we noticed the following (see doc attached):

Gr. 1- The number of students that were proficient in making connections to text increased by 8%

Gr. 2- The number of students that were proficient in making connections to text increased by 1%

Gr. 3- The number of students that were proficient in making connections to text increased by 15%

Gr. 4- The number of students that were proficient in making connections to text decreased by 8%

Gr. 5- The number of students that were proficient in making connections to text increased by 8%

Gr. 6- The number of students that were proficient in making connections to text increased by 22%

Gr. 7- The number of students that were proficient in making connections to text increased by 7%

To what extent are the actions making a difference? The evidence shows that overall, students are improving in their ability to make connections to text. The grade 2 and 4 cohorts of students were identified as making less progress in the area of making connections to texts.
How will we move forward accordingly? We need to be more intentional in the practices that are being implemented and delivered. We need to follow up with a plan for implementation after opportunities for professional development and collaboration. For example, in early September we could introduce and agree upon school wide approaches to improve literacy and making connections in particular.
