Action Post #3
Our Sensory Room opened in May! Eight students regularly used the room using the guidelines below:
Sensory Room
The time spent in the sensory room should support the student's self-regulation and readiness to return to learning, not as unstructured time, or a place to do work or use iPads.
Consider the purpose of the visit - is the student overstimulated and needs to calm, or too tired and needs to energize, etc.
Sensory Room Instructions:
Students must take off their shoes when they enter and leave them by the door.
Students sign in by moving their picture or writing their name under the Who’s Here heading. They must also communicate (say / point to / use AAC) how they are feeling.
Students may select 1-3 activities to engage in during their time in the sensory room. Based on their current state you can guide their choices by offering appropriate options. Move the selected activity options down, and have the student choose the 1-3 pictures to place on the routine strip.
Students may engage in the activities for 3-5 minutes max per activity. Try to note how they are responding and use that to guide if they need more time / future choices.
After completing activities clean everything up and return to class. Lock the door.
