Our Focus

Inquiry Question #1:

How can we support students to develop stronger reading proficiency and make meaningful connections to text and the world around them?

For the 2025–2026 school year, we will continue our essential work to enhance reading proficiency and foster an interest in reading across all grade levels. 
Data from the 2025 MDI (Middle Years Development Index) indicates that less than 40 percent of our grade 5 students read outside of school time. Our report card data indicates that 58 percent of our students are Proficient or Extending in English Language Arts. Our commitment is to equip all students with the tools, strategies, and support they need to become confident, capable readers.  

Action: In our first term, all teachers will administer the Richmond Formative Reading Assessment, and our Kindergarten and Grade 1 teachers will complete the Spark and Spark 1 screeners. The data gathered from these assessments will help to identify key areas of focus for instructional practices. 

Inquiry Question #2:

How can we support students and staff to strengthen a positive and safe school culture?

In the coming school year, we will continue to use our learning spaces intentionally to promote self-regulation and support student learning. Our sensory room is already making a positive impact for many students. However, staff have observed a growing need to further develop students’ self-regulation and social-emotional skills—both in the classroom and on the playground. In addition, less than 40 percent of our grade 5 students reported in the 2025 MDI that they felt they had the necessary tools to self-regulate at school.  

Action: We will collaborate with District specialists to explore revitalizing our "Currie Cares" model and language through school wide initiatives, as well as assess our play spaces and play practices to support our students in healthy play. 

Together, we aim to foster a school culture that is safe, inclusive, and supportive for all.
