Looking at the week ahead: we are looking forward to Autumn celebrations with Halloween fun at General Currie. We thank those who have supported in cleaning out pumpkins ready for pumpkin activities! We also thank our committee of teachers for preparing a fun plan for students on Tuesday. Parents are invited to join us for our annual Costume parade outside at 9:20 am. We acknowledge that not all of our students and families celebrate Halloween. We need to be aware - for those celebrating Halloween, or for those participating in Autumn time activities on Tuesday - the day needs to be fun for all.
It is important to keep in mind that we need to be sensitive to groups that have been marginalized through mimicry and cultural appropriation during Halloween and other ‘dress up’ events. It’s good to keep in mind that the following are NOT Costumes:
RACE (black face/brown face)
CULTURE (Indigenous regalia/dreadlocks) RELIGIOUS FAITH (religious figures/gods/saints/gurus/hijab) GENDER (gender switching for humour or to mock) TRAUMA (hangman’s noose/any and all weapons or items that mimic weapons)Please, do not send your children with masks or accessories that are meant to represent weapons or that feature blood/gore. This is frightening for younger students and we want all students to enjoy the excitement of the day. Thank you very much for your care and attention to these things.
We appreciate our Currie Community of learners and the care and respect that is shown to all!
With wishes for a beautiful late-October weekend,
General Currie Elementary
