September 25 - 29 Week at a Glance and Reconciliation Week

Dear General Currie Families,

We look back on an eventful week at school!  We were happy to see so many families join us on Thursday for our Meet the Staff and Family Picnic.  Our thanks to so many of our PAC members who organized and supported at the event.  It was especially wonderful to see the joy on children's faces during the Magic Show!

On Friday, all employees of the Richmond District met together to learn about Truth and Reconciliation.  It was a rich day of learning, reflecting, sharing and planning for Truth and Reconciliation week ahead.  Collectively, we share a commitment to BC Teachers Council's Performance Standard nine which declares:

Educators respect and value the history of First Nations, Inuit and Métis in Canada and the impact of the past on the present and the future. Educators contribute towards truth, reconciliation and healing. Educators foster a deeper understanding of ways of knowing and being, histories, and cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Métis.

We invite our parents to visit our 'Every Child Matters' display in the front entrance in the week ahead.  We also extend an invitation to a special performance this coming Friday as General Currie acknowledges Orange Shirt Day ahead of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th.

We are pleased to have a performance by Coastal Wolf Pack and invite you to join us at the start of the school day in the gym:

Tsatsu Stalqayu translated into English means Coastal Wolf Pack. A traditional Salish song and dance group, the group consists of over 25 male and female members of a single family, from age 6 months to over age 50. Their variation in age and gender allows for more song, dance and stories to be shared on stage and in their presentations. The members of the group with pride represent the following Coast Salish communities: Musqueam, Squamish, Tsartlip, Nanaimo and more.  This breadth of membership along with the multigenerational performers gives their audiences a sense of belonging to this, the hereditary lands of the Coast Salish people.

We look forward to the learning that is ahead of us!  A reminder that Friday is also our first Hot Lunch day (Sushi - thank you, PAC!).  Please note that tomorrow (Sunday) is your last day to make orders.

As we embrace the start of Autumntime, we wish all of our families a pleasant weekend!

Mr. Sala    Ms. Pikkarainen     General Currie Staff
